How to Make a Cat Window Perch

It̵7;s happened to many pet owners. Your cat climbs up on your windowsill to lounge in the sun or gaze outdoors and scratches the paint on your windowsill. Even worse, some cats may scratch and claw at the drapes or curtains to pull themselves up, destroying your window treatments. You can help eliminate this problem without banishing your cat to the floor by making your own cat window perch without attaching anything to your walls or windowsill.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at your cat while it is lying down to determine how big the boards for your window perch need to be. Measure and cut three boards of the same length and width, making sure you make them large enough for your cat to rest on comfortably.

    • 2

Measure the distance from the floor to the windowsill. Cut two sections of PVC pipe as long as the length you just measured. Cut another six sections half the length from the floor to the windowsill.

    • 3

Cut 10 sections of pipe as wide as the boards you are using for your perch. Assemble the pipe pieces together using 90-degree elbows and T-fittings so that you have two sections with a long rectangle and a smaller rectangle next to it. The pipes will make an ̶0;L̶1; shape with a wide bottom portion.

    • 4

Stand the two sections up so that the bottom of the ̶0;L̶1; is on the floor facing away from the windowsill. Fit the last two pieces of pipe that are the same width as the boards between the two ̶0;L̵7;s̶1; to make the base for your window perch.

    • 5

Cut sections of carpet the same width and length of the boards. Secure the carpet with carpet adhesive or use a staple gun to attach the carpet to the underside of the boards.

    • 6

Place your boards on the pipe frame to determine where you need to make your holes for the screws. One board will fit over the bottom of the base near the floor. Place the next board on the bottom part of the ̶0;L̶1; like a shelf. Position the last board on top of the frame just under the windowsill.

    • 7

Drill small holes into the PVC pipe to guide your screws. Screw the boards into the pipe with wood screws so that they are secure.
