How to Keep Cats From Tracking Litter Around the House

Many types of litter can get stuck in cats̵7; fur and in between their toes, causing them to track it around the house. Litter tracking becomes an especially big problem if your cat tracks it over furniture and countertops where it may not be noticed until it has damaged the fabric or caused a health hazard if it comes into contact with food. Some types of litter cause less tracking than others to help eliminate this problem.

Keep your cat̵7;s litter box clean by scooping out solid waste and clumps at least once a day. Cats are naturally cleanly creatures who want to hide their waste. Most cats will dig around more in a dirty litter box, which can lead to more litter getting stuck to their paws and more litter being tracked outside the litter box.

Purchase a rubber litter mat to place outside the box. Special litter mats with soft rubber knobs are available at pet stores to catch excess litter when your cat steps out of the box. Alternatively, place a clean towel in front of the litter box for your cat to step on. Shake the mat or towel out into the trash daily to get rid of excess litter.

Use a different litter. Non-sandy clumping litter cuts back on tracking. Sandy litters are very fine and stick easily to cats̵7; paws and fur. Pellet-type litters also do not track much due to the larger particles. Litters made of organic cellulose fiber, such as Good Mews, are highly absorbent and do not track easily.
