How to Distinguish Male Cats From Female Cats

It can be particularly difficult to determine the gender of cats, especially kittens. Unless you have an unneutered male with obvious testicles, the genitalia looks practically the same on males and females. However, if you know what to look for, you can easily discover the gender of your furry friend.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your kitten or cat so that it is standing up with the head away from you. You may have to scruff the cat in order for him to stay.

    • 2

Lift up the kitty̵7;s tail. In order to determine the sex, you will need to get the tail out of your viewing area.

    • 3

Locate the anus. Females will have an opening that is positioned very close to the anus. Males will have an opening that is spaced further away from the anus than a female. In addition, it is also possible that you can see an undeveloped scrotum, which would appear as a small swelling, in males. You may also be able to feel the testicles in the space between the two openings.
