How to Keep Cats Out of Blinds

Cats love to gaze out of windows. Being the inquisitive, curious creatures that they are, kitties need to be aware of the ongoings of the neighborhood. While windows may be the best seats in the house to view the outside world, they can pose a few problems. Many a cat has been injured by mini-blinds, whether they get caught in the blinds themselves or tangled in the cord. By using a few, simple tricks, you can keep your furry friend away from the decorative hazards.

Startle your cat with a loud noise when she jumps on the window. A good way to do this is by placing coins in a coffee can and shaking it when your kitty is about to jump on the sill. She may eventually associate the loud noise with the window and stay away.

    • 2

Apply double-sided tape to the window sill. Typically, cats do not like anything that is sticky. It may take a few times, but kitty will probably decide the uncomfortable feeling of the tape is not worth the view.

    • 3

Spray a citrus-based scent along the window. Most cats find the strong fragrance quite offensive and will avoid the odor at all costs. Be sure to find a spray that will not damage or stain your window.

    • 4

Tape foil on the window ledge. Kitties typically do not the sound or feel of the foil when they walk on it. After a few jumps, your cat will likely stay away from the sill.

    • 5

Place a carpet runner on the sill, bottom side up so that the spikes are sticking out. While the spikes are usually not sharp, they are not comfortable, either. Your cat will probably not want to stand or lay on this type of surface.

Use a scat mat. Scat mats are designed to deliver a small shock when stepped on. While this is the most severe method, it is usually not that painful and your cat will most likely avoid the mat all together.

    • 7

Pull your blinds to a height that the cat cannot reach. As they say, if you can't beat them, join them and if all other methods fail, you may have to resort to giving in to the cat. But at least you know he will be out of the blinds.
