Call your local animal shelter first. Ask them if they have any kittens. If they do, get the shelter's office hours and arrange a time to go and meet with the kittens. Some shelters may require you to make an appointment. Some humane societies have photos of kittens posted on their website.
Use Petfinder (see resources) to locate kittens in other cities near you. This will save you the time of driving to each shelter to look for kittens. Petfinder also lists the personality and picture of each kitten, which can help you decide which kitten is right for your family.
Check your local newspaper to see if anyone has kittens for sale. This is an excellent way to get a kitten at a good price. Call the seller and ask if you can meet with the kittens.
Visit your area pet shops and see if any of them currently have kittens. If they do, you can visit the kittens and spend some time with them to see if any of their personalities suit your family.
Check all of the kitten's shot records as well as any health reports before making your final decision. You may also want to inquire about the health of the kitten's parents. You don't want to bring home a sick kitten that could end up costing you a fortune in vet bills.
Negotiate a price for the kitten. Animal shelters usually have a set donation fee, but individuals selling kittens will often take less than they are asking for. Some individuals will even give kittens away for free if they know the kitten is going to a good home.
How to Find a Kitten
Adding a kitten to your family can be a big decision. It is a good idea to hold a family meeting and make sure that all members are willing to help out with the responsibility of taking care of a kitten. Kittens need to be fed and have their litter boxes changed on a daily basis. Of course they also need love and attention. Once everyone agrees, you can begin a search to find a kitten.
