Homemade Cat Urine Odor Removal

Cats have earned a reputation of being smelly because of the terrible lingering odor of their urine. Between litter boxes and accident spots, the smell can permeate your entire home. Many retail products are designed to eliminate cat odors, but home remedy mixtures work just as well and cost much less.

  1. Mixing a Cat Urine Remover

    • Basic household items combine to make a cat urine remover that can't be beat. Each item has properties of odor removal, sanitization, and spot removal. Mix together 1 cup of white vinegar, a few tsp. of Listerine original mouthwash and 2 tbsp. of baking soda. This concoction will fizz and bubble because of the reaction of the vinegar and baking soda. Add 1/2 cup of warm water.

    Using Urine Remover on Carpet and Upholstery

    • First, clean up the mess as much as possible. Dry the area thoroughly, using an old towel or paper towels, making sure to apply pressure because cat urine can soak deep down into the carpet padding and furniture. Once the area is dried, apply the mixture to the area and let it sit for 15 minutes. This enables the mixture to soak in and neutralize the odor while also cleaning the area. After 15 minutes, apply a towel to the area to soak up excess moisture, then allow it to air dry.

    Using Urine Remover on Hard Surfaces

    • For accidents on hard surfaces such as tile or linoleum or cleaning the litter box, using urine remover is even easier. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray the area. Let it sit for a few moments and wipe it up. For washing the litter box, fill a washtub with warm water and add the mixture to it, then submerge the empty litter box and allow it to soak for half an hour. Remove and rinse.
