Homemade Cat Traps

Sometimes it is necessary to catch a cat. There is an easy way to make a homemade cat trap that is humane and will not hurt the cat. Do not try to capture and hurt cats or catch them in an inhumane way. There is an over population of cats, but the best way to solve this is to get to the root of the problem and advocate the spaying and neutering of cats.
  1. Reasons to Catch a Cat

    • Many pet cats are constant companions that come when called or at least at the smell at tuna. Other cats can be skittish and sometimes even seem to be aware of a foreboding incident, like a trip to the vet. You might have to catch your cat if it is impossible to grab her with your hands when it's time to go to the vet. You might also have a hard time catching it if it is an outdoor/indoor cat when it's time for vacation, and you might want your furry feline to stay inside while you are away.

Perhaps you have a feral cat wandering the neighborhood, and it is not a safe place. The cat will not go anywhere near you, but you can trap it in a cat trap. You can then take the cat to the vet to get it spayed or neutered, so there is not an overabundance of homeless kittens.

    Homemade Cat Trap

    • To make a homemade cat trap, you will need a container such as a large milk crate, string, bait (a cat toy) and two markers. Dip the cat toy in a can of tuna fish, which has a strong-smell cats generally like. Tie the cat toy to the string and attach it to the inside bottom of the milk crate so that it will hang down about 3 inches when the milk crate is placed upside-down. Tie another piece of string to the bottom of the cat toy that will reach to the edge of the milk crate. Position the milk crate upside down with two markers propping it up on one side. Place the dangling string between the top marker and the crate. If the string is moved, the markers will become unbalanced and fall, causing the milk crate to fall.

Place the cat trap in a quiet area where the cat is sure to find it. Watch from a distance to make the cat feel comfortable exploring it. Curiosity will catch the cat when it enters the milk crate to sniff at and bat the toy the crate. After the crate falls down around the cat, get to it as quick as possible because a strong cat will probably be able to find a way out. If the cat is feral, put on gloves and long-sleeved clothing to avoid getting scratched or bitten. You can slide a piece of sturdy cardboard under the crate and cat, then flip it over to avoid touching a feral cat.
