Free Homemade Cat Urine Odor Removal

Cat urine is one odor that is extremely hard to get rid of. Even after normal washing, the smell remains and the cat will continue to frequent the area to re-offend. The smell of cat urine is very distinctive and will stimulate the cat to revisit the area repeatedly. There are many products on the market to clean up the problem, some costly; however, you can make your own with products found right under the kitchen sink.
  1. Gather the Products You Will Need

    • To remove cat urine order, gather the following products: baking soda, white vinegar, dishwashing liquid (without lemon or orange), hydrogen peroxide and a hair dryer or fan to dry the surface quickly. You want to absorb as much of the urine as possible before you begin removing the odor. If the urine has already dried and you cannot tell where the smell is coming from, use a black light in a dark room. The black light will illuminate any spot that is on the surface.

    The First Step

    • Mix half white vinegar and half water together in a spray bottle. If the soiled surface is a mattress or cushion, make sure you saturate the area down to the fibers. Allow the surface to dry with the help of the blow dryer or fan. Wet-dry vacuums come in handy because you can use it to pull out any excess moisture from the fibers. Using this solution first allows the vinegar to neutralize the main ingredient in urine that causes the smell--ammonia.

    The Final Step

    • After the surface is dry, sprinkle the area with baking soda. Mix a teaspoon of the dishwashing detergent with a quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide and apply the solution to the surface to dissolve the baking soda. Using your fingers (wear gloves for this part of the process), rub the solution into the fibers of the surface. If the surface is a bare floor, apply the solution, let it dry, then vacuum. Once the solution is dry on the fabrics, you can vacuum the solution up as well. The vinegar neutralizes the ammonia, and the peroxide kills any bacteria that is present that also causes the smell. The baking soda is the deodorizer that absorbs any further odors.
