Why Cats Play in the Litter Box

It seems that some cats enjoy the feel of litter, and for no reason at all, they will hang around in their litter box. Does your cat seem to use his litter box as a playground? It might be in play, or it might be more.
  1. Age

    • It's more common to see kittens play in litter boxes, as they simply see a big, fun sandbox. And since they're smaller, two or more can fit inside at the same time.

    Hiding

    • The litter box may act as a hiding spot if the cat is feeling threatened, and if the litter box is covered, it may enhance that feeling of security. Or your cat may be hiding in play---waiting to pounce on you when you walk by.

    Sleeping

    • Cats like secure places to sleep, which is why they love wedging themselves into small spaces. They are drawn to scents they recognize, and the litter box smells most like them, even when clean.

    Territory

    • Cats are territorial creatures. If your cat is lurking in the litter box, he may be asserting dominance over another household cat by preventing the other cat from using the box.

    Considerations

    • It's more likely your cat will hang out in the litter box after it's just been cleaned. Cats have sensitive noses and aren't likely to hang out when the litter box smells bad.
