Home Remedies for Removing Cat Urine

Owning a cat comes with occasional odors and accidents. Cats often urinate on furniture, clothing and the carpet. You will want to remove the potent smell immediately and permanently. Soak up the urine first, then follow a few steps to treat the affected area.
  1. General Guidelines

    • Seek veterinarian assistance if your cat is urinating in the house and is litter trained, as there might be a medical problem.

Always soak up any excess cat urine before applying homemade cleaners. Test the carpet, fabric and area you intend to treat in a small area before applying to an entire surface. Wear gloves and be sure to ventilate the room when cleaning.

Be aware that ammonia and bleach can create a toxic mixture. Use soap and water to clean non-carpeted floors and walls, followed by plain water. Repeat this step to ensure you have removed all of the ammonia. You can also use vinegar to neutralize the ammonia in cat urine as well.

    Surfaces

    • To clean walls, tiled floors and cement floors, use a spray bottle bleach mixture. Mix water and bleach in a 10 to 1 ratio and spray it on the area. After about 30 seconds, wipe the area clean.

For carpeted areas, furniture and mattress, start by wetting the urine-stained area with half white vinegar and half water. Just before the solution dries in the carpet fibers, blot it with a paper towel. Sprinkle baking soda onto the area, followed by a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. Work all of these ingredients together with dishwashing liquid on a scrub brush. Vacuum the carpet once the mixture has dried.

    Laundry

    • For any item that can be washed in the washing machine, add ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar to the laundry load. Use your laundry detergent as you normally would.
