Despite the aloof nature of these animals, most cats respond well to positive reinforcement. Despite your best effort, you may need some kind of cat repellent agent to prevent unwanted behavior. Fill the squirt bottle with cool water. Set the dial to stream; keep it handy. When kitty makes a run for the counter or table, give him a good squirt of water. Most cats will run quickly away. Water is harmless as well so there are no side effects except for better behavior.

Rip off a few pieces of aluminum foil. Fold them to fit in a line around the edges of your counters or tabletops. Cats shy away from things that feel crinkly under their feet. If you've got a persistent animal, crumple up a few sheets of aluminum foil. Smooth it out slightly. Place the sheets flat on the counters. This should act as an excellent cat repellent for surfaces.

Wipe or spray white vinegar on surfaces to prevent your cat from frequenting those spots. This works well on houseplants. Vinegar won't harm your cat at all, and the strong smell usually discourages repeat behaviors.

    • 4

Spray citrus scent on surfaces you'd like to protect. You can even crush up orange rinds or sections to create the citrus scent. Simply wipe it on with a paper towel. Refresh the scent frequently for effective cat repellent.

    • 5

Dump a handful of small pebbles or loose change into an empty coffee can. Secure the lid. Rattle the can every time your cat exhibits unwanted behavior. Cats hate loud noises so repeated use of the rattle should stop any bad behaviors with a few loud shakes.

Apply double-sided tape to the edges of any tables, counters or shelves your cat loves to jump on. Cats detest anything sticking to their paws.
