How to Move a Cat Litter Box

Moving your cat's litter box can be a daunting task. Nobody wants to deal with the smell and mess that can result if the cat starts going to the bathroom outside its litter box. The fact that cats are such creatures of habit will actually help you, because as long as you provide the cat plenty of opportunity to keep going in his familiar box he'll probably continue doing just that.

Instructions

  1. Plan A

    • 1

Set up the new litter box in the desired location.

    • 2

Put some of the soiled litter from the old litter box in the new box so that your cat can identify it by scent.

    • 3

Wait until your cat has started using the new litter box, then take the old one away.

    Plan B

    • 4

Move the old litter box a foot or two closer to its new location every day.

    • 5

Check to make sure your cat continues using the old litter box. If he shows signs of going potty anywhere else in the house, move the litter box to that exact spot. Make sure he's using the litter box again, then very gradually start moving it toward the desired final location again.

    • 6

Keep moving the old litter box until you've gotten it to the new location, with the cat still using it.
