How to Build a Cat Window Seat

Your cat loves to look out of the window, but the ledges are too narrow for him/her to sit on. Extend the ledge and give him a nice cushy place to set and watch the birds.

Hopefully, you can find a shelf the exact width of your window, but if not, have a 1' x the width of the window cut at the home center for a small fee.
You won't need to paint or refinish the bare wood, as we are going to be covering it.

There are several options for shelf holders; decorative or L-shaped or triangular shaped. Pick the one of your choice.
If you choose a decorative wood shelf holder, drill the holes in the shelf wood, as well as the top of the shelf holder, making sure the holes align. After you make the hole in the shelf, have someone hold it to the window for you, and with a nail, go thru the drilled hole and mark the spot on the shelf holder.

If you are using metal L bracket holders or triangular holders, you will still make the hole in the wood, but use screws to attach the shelf to the bracket.

Once the brackets are attached to the shelf, attach the brackets to the wall. You will need to drill holes, &insert a plastic threader. This is to insure that even if you have a large cat, the shelf will still hold him without falling.

On top of the shelf, put a layer of batting cut to the exact size of the top of the shelf, and attach using spray adhesive.

Cut the faux fur to the width and depth of the shelf, adding for the thickness of the board and enough to turn under to the underside of the shelf.
Align the faux fur even along the window side of the shelf, and beginning in the center, and working out each side, staple along about every inch.
Remove the shelf, turn upside down and beginning in the front side of the shelf put in 5 or 6 staples underneath, then staple some on the right side and then the left side. All of this is to insure the material will not bunch and wrinkle.
      Complete the stapling.
Apply a strip of cording to the window side of the shelf to disguise the staples.
Re-attach to the brackets, and stand back.
