Instructions
Research your trip. Plan to stop at hotels and motels that welcome pets. Do your homework and find out the rules ahead of time. Chances are, you may have to make some adjustments in order to find places that will accommodate your cat.
Choose a cat carrier. This is essential, whether you are traveling by car or flying. Airplanes require carriers, and your cat will be much more comfortable in one on a long car trip. Cat carriers come with both soft and hard sides; decide which kind you--and your cat--would prefer.
Bring your cat up to date with her shots before embarking on a cross-country trip. Bring you cat's immunization records with you as well: Some states may check them at the border. You may also want to ask your veterinarian if he recommends a mild tranquilizer for your cat, if the animal has a nervous personality. (Do this only if you are comfortable with the idea.)
Equip your cat with a good harness, collar, leash, and ID tags. A harness and leash will allow you to take your cat out of the car during rest stops. Make sure the tags include your name, address and cell-phone number. You could also consider investing in a microchip that will allow you to track your cat if he gets loose.
Keep things as familiar as possible for your cat. Pack a supply of her regular food, water and litter. Don't forget to bring her favorite toys and bedding as well! These things will make her feel more comfortable and safe during the long cross-country trip.
