How to Prepare for Putting a Pet to Sleep

It's never easy to live with a sick pet. It's very hard to make the decision to put one to sleep, but sometimes you must do it. It's best to prepare yourself emotionally before you actually go through with it.

Instructions

    • 1

Take stock of your pet's health. If it's possible to maintain your pet's health with medication, it may be worth it if the medicine will give your pet a quality life. If not, or if you can't afford it, it's best to give your pet some peace. Understand that you are doing the right thing out of love.

Research the procedure. In most cases, the vet tech shaves a bit of the fur off one of the forearms of the animal. The veterinarian then injects a drug into the animal's vein. The pet simply falls asleep. It is quick and painless; the only downside is that sometimes the clippers and the commotion scare them.

Ask your vet if he can come to your house for the procedure. It may cost a bit more but your pet will be less afraid in his own element.

    • 4

Prepare a small grave for your pet. You can do this in your backyard or in a pet cemetery. Buy a grave marker that symbolizes what your pet means to you. You can visit the grave anytime you feel sad or miss your pet.

    • 5

Give your pet lots of attention in the days preceding the procedure. You want your pet to be happy and know that you love him in his last days.

    • 6

Hold your pet during the procedure, if possible. This will be very comforting to him and he'll feel safe. It's recommended to wrap the animal in a towel because sometimes the bowels or bladder evacuate as part of the process.

    • 7

Bury your pet in the grave you prepared. Perhaps hold a small ceremony to help you cope with his death.
