How to Cat-Proof the Litter Box

Cat-proofing the litter box? That doesn't make sense, you may be thinking. Isn't that where we want them to be? Yes, but cats, wonderful and cool as they are, can be amazingly destructive. Not only do they chew up cords and scratch furniture, some cats will totally shred a litter box liner with their pawing and clawing until there's a big mess. If you have a regular litter box--not one of the high-tech ones--use this system and you should be able to keep a round of litter for about two weeks. Read on to learn how to cat-proof the litter box.

Instructions

    • 1

Put litter box liner bag inside of litter box.

    • 2

Put the newspaper inside of box. You don't need an entire paper, just enough to reinforce the lining.

    • 3

Arrange the thick paper inside the box over the newspaper. Line it securely around the inside, paying special attention to the corners. If you need to, cut the paper to get rid of excess edges. You may want to place hold the paper with a small piece of tape until you can get the corners secured.

    • 4

Begin taping the edges of the paper to the plastic litter box liner. Tape all around the box, paying special attention to the corners and any folds and creases in the paper where the cat can hook its claws. The object is to have a smooth surface to add the litter.

    • 5

      Add the cat litter.
