What does a cats mouth look like?

Upper Incisors

The upper central incisors are very tiny and peg-shaped. They may be partially covered by the gums. Sometimes they are completely missing.

The lateral incisors are slightly longer than the central incisors and are less peg-shaped.

Lower Incisors

The lower incisors are more or less the same size and shape.

Canine Teeth

The canine teeth, or fangs, are four long and pointed teeth. The upper canines are larger and longer than the lower canines.

Premolars

There are four premolars on the top and four on the bottom. The upper premolars are often called carnassials because of their shearing action, which is used to cut meat.

Molars

There are two molars on the upper jaw and one on the lower jaw. The upper molars have three roots and the lower molar has two.

Tongue

The tongue is covered with small, sharp points called papillae. These papillae help the cat to grip and tear its food. The tongue is also used to groom the fur.

Palate

The roof of the cat's mouth is covered with a layer of tissue called the palate. The palate is lined with mucous membranes, which help to lubricate the food as it passes down the esophagus.

Frenulum

The frenulum is a small fold of tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth. It helps to keep the tongue in place.

Gums

The gums are the soft tissues that surround the teeth. They are lined with blood vessels and nerves, which help to protect the teeth.
