Dog Proofing Your Cat Dish

Cats rely on a carnivorous, meat-based diet, while dogs are considered omnivores and consume a blend of meat and plant-based food. Niacin, taurine and arginine are just a few of the nutrients that cat food should include that a dog can manufacture internally or convert from plant-based food. Place your cat's food in a location that is inaccessible to the dog so they will both get the food that is healthy for them.
  1. Scheduled Feedings

    • Give your cat her food at scheduled times during the day instead of leaving the food out for her to eat free choice. Cats are carnivorous hunters and thrive on scheduled meals instead of having access all day long. You can be confident that your dog will not ingest any of your cat's food while you are in another room or away from home with this method.

    Dog Gate

    • Install a tall gate blocking your dog from the room where your cat̵7;s food is located. Your cat will easily be able to jump over the gate and access the food. Baby gates work very well and can be installed and moved easily. If you have a very large dog, affix the gate to the wall a few inches off the floor so your dog cannot jump over it, yet cannot squeeze under it. Your cat will have the option of jumping the gate or sliding underneath it to enjoy her meal.

    Height

    • Place the cat food in a location that is above your dog's jumping ability. The top of a cat tower or on a washing machine, counter or designated shelf may be safe and convenient locations for your cat to access her food. Choose a location carefully and always place the food in a place that will not encourage your cat to jump up on other off-limits areas, such as the kitchen counter or dining room table.

    Discipline

    • Discipline your dog when you catch him in the act. Say "No!" in a firm, clear manner. You may also choose to shake a can with a few coins in it or spray your dog with water as you discipline him. Consistent discipline is necessary to curb your dog̵7;s cat food habit. You must reprimand him every time for it to work. Over time, your dog will associate the cat's food with negative attention from you.
