Why do cats circle?

There are several reasons why cats circle:

Hunting instinct: Circling is a natural behavior that cats exhibit while hunting. They circle their prey to get a better view of it and to assess the best way to attack.

Marking their territory: Cats also circle as a way of marking their territory. When they circle, they leave behind scent marks from their paws and glands, which serve as a warning to other cats to stay away.

Comfort and relaxation: Some cats circle before lying down because it helps them to find the most comfortable position. Circling before sitting or lying down is also a way for cats to relax and prepare themselves for sleep.

Seeking attention: Cats may also circle their owners or other people in order to get attention. This behavior is often accompanied by meowing or other vocalizations.

Disorientation: In some cases, circling can also be a sign of disorientation or confusion. If your cat suddenly starts circling and seems disoriented, it's important to take them to a veterinarian to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
