How to Keep the Cat From Pawing Doors

Since cats can't communicate with words, they must resort to other measures. One thing a cat will do is paw, or scratch, on your door. The cat may be doing this for several reasons. It may want to get into your bedroom for your companionship, get outside for some exercise and fresh air or it may just want to use its claws on something. Fortunately, there is a way to stop your cat from continuing with this sometimes annoying behavior.

Set up a scratching post somewhere in your home that is easily accessible to the cat. Teaching the cat to scratch her paws on the post (and not a door) will eliminate the pawing, if that was the reason the cat was pawing your door in the first place.

Ignore your cat's pawing. Your cat is probably trying to demand your attention while you are sleeping or otherwise occupied. Your cat will not die of loneliness, and will eventually stop pawing your door after several attempts have not returned any positive results.

Schedule outdoor time for your cat that is convenient for you each day at the same time. Your cat will begin to expect when it is time to go out, and won't have any need to paw the door. Again, you want to ignore the cat when it paws the door demanding to go out. Eventually it will take note that you will let it out on your terms.
