Detering Cats From Hanging on the Porch

Some cats like to take over the house. Even though they may not live in the home, they may still stake a claim. Porches are one area that cats like to hang out. For those homeowners who don't want any cats on their porches, there are a few safe and well-regarded methods for repelling cats. Because cats are individuals, you need to find the method that works with that particular cat.

Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it on the porch. Every time you see a cat, spray him with water. Over time, the cat will associate the spray of water with being on your porch and it will stay away.

Use citrus smells to deter the cats. Spray a citrus scented air freshener around the porch daily. Another option is to peel lemons, limes or oranges and scatter the rinds and peels around the perimeter of the porch. Cats don't like the smell of citrus.

Sprinkle ginger powder around the porch. Cats also don't like the smell of ginger.

    • 4

Scare the cats away with a loud "no" or other noise, such as shaking a metal can with pennies inside.

Try a commercial cat repellent. These products are usually sprays that come in scents that cat's find offensive.
