How to Keep My Cats Off the Heater Vents

Heater vents are warm places that many cats like to be around. Some cats sleep on the vents, preventing heat from entering a room. Other cats fall into large vents and can't find their way out. Some spray the vents with their urine. Whatever the case, many cat owners want to keep their furry friends away from the heating vents in the home. While not all methods work with all cats, it is trial-and-error to find a method or methods that keep your family cat away from the heater vents.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the door to the room with the vent if possible. This keeps the cat out of the room and off the vent.

    • 2

Fill a spray bottle with water. Spray the cat each time she approaches the vent.

    • 3

Shout at the cat with a loud "go away" or "no" when he is on the vent.

    • 4

Peel off the rinds of citrus fruits such as limes, lemons or oranges. Place these rinds and peel in a small container. Cats hate the smell of citrus fruits, so the smell acts as a deterrent.

    • 5

Spray a citrus-scented air freshener around the vent daily. Or spray the scent into a clean cloth and tie the cloth to the vent.

    • 6

Fill a bottle with one part vinegar and one part water. Spray the area around the vent on a regular basis. Vinegar is also offensive to cats, who have a keen sense of smell.
