How to Get Your Cat to Not Poop on the Floor

Many cats use their litter box without a problem. However, when your cat suddenly decides to defecate on the floor, try to determine the cause of the behavioral switch in your cat. Medical conditions, not liking the litter you've chosen for your cat or having unclean litter can propel your cat to engage in inappropriate defecation in your home. If your cat has a medical condition causing the behavior, treatment from your veterinarian will usually resolve the issue. Otherwise, mending what your cat dislikes about the current situation will help prevent your cat from using your floor as it's toilet.

Some cat litters can prove unpleasant.

Experiment with the litter you use for your cat. Litter that is overpowering in its scent may repel your cat, indicates Pet Education. Using a different substrate may appease your cat.

Find a secluded area for your cat's litter box. Your cat may not like the current location of its litter box and resort to using the floor. Using more than one litter box in your home can also help.

    • 3

Take the cover off your cat's litter box if you use one. Your cat may feel vulnerable enclosed in the box.

    • 4

Clean your cat's litter box often. This means scooping out waste immediately after your cat uses the box, which helps remove unpleasant odors. Throwing out old litter and replenishing the litter regularly will have your cat wanting to use its litter box.

    • 5

Identify if your cat has a bowel disease or stress. Placing your cat on anti-anxiety medications can help minimize stress factors.

    • 6

Put your cat's water bowl over areas where it defecated, suggests The Humane Society of the United States. Alternatively, you can place your cat's food bowl over the area. Cats will avoid using the potty near their food and water.

Fill a clean, empty soda can with a handful of coins. Tape the opening. When you spot your cat going to the bathroom on your floor, toss the can near your cat to startle it, advises Pet Education.

    • 8

Enclose your cat into one room of your home if necessary. Provide your cat with its litter box, food and water. Only allow your cat to progress into other rooms of your home when it learns to stop pooping on your floors.
