How to Show Your Cat That You Are Dominant

Cat dominance issues are not only a problem for the other pets in the house. If allowed to playfully attack family and friends or "rule the roost," cats will also begin to assert their dominance over humans. Cats that feel superiority over humans will begin to bite, scratch and hiss at people as a way to show their authority. There are several dos and don'ts to ensure that no dominance issues arise with your cat.

Instructions

    • 1

Speak to a veterinarian about having your cat spayed or neutered, especially while the cat is still young. This action will help prevent dominant behavior before it begins.

    • 2

Avoid allowing the cat to play with your feet and ankles. Although humans may perceive this behavior as playful, the cat sees it as a show of its power over humans.

    • 3

If your cat engages in dominant behavior, remove the cat from the situation immediately after the behavior begins. If your cat begins to scratch, bite or hiss at you, take it to another room so it is away from any other pets and humans. This will show the cat that this type of behavior is unacceptable and only leads to isolation.

    • 4

Once your cat begins to show dominant behavior, ignore it and do not show it any type of affection. Turn your head and body away from the cat until it displays a happier, more submissive pose. A relaxed cat will walk with its head held high in the air and its tail up. Once the cat has calmed down into this stance, offer it affection and a treat.

    • 5

If your cat's dominant behavior continues, spray your cat near its face or body with a squirt of cool water. This will show the cat you are the boss without having to resort to any physical punishments. Avoid spraying the cat directly in the face as this will cause the animal to become more agitated.
