How to Keep an Outside Cat in an Electronic Yard Fence

Electronic yard fences are not just for dogs anymore. Your cat can be trained to stay within the fences perimeter the same as a dog. There are two types of fences available. One uses the buried wire method that shocks the animal when they try to cross the barrier. The other emits a radio signal that sends a warning tone to the animal before the shock when they get too close to the signal perimeter. The radio signal fence is recommended for cats as they can easily jump over the wire on buried wire fences.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the radio signal fence system according to manufacturer's instructions. The perimeter can be set as small or as large as you wish and can be custom set to keep cats away from bird feeders and other undesirable areas in the yard. The system consists of a radio transmitter and collar receiver for the cat.

Put fresh batteries in the collar, put it on your cat and turn it on.

    • 3

Allow the cat to go outside, always wearing the collar. It will venture out and begin to hear the warning tone when it gets too close to the radio signal. The tone is in a pitch that only animals can hear.

Watch the cat for an inclination to test the boundaries. If it goes past the warning signal zone, it will receive a shock like static electricity from the collar. Most cats will not try this more than a few times. Your cat will learn the warning tone means a shock is not far behind.

Supervise your cat the first few times you let it out to see how it reacts to the system. A cat is rarely traumatized by the warning tone or shock. It learns quickly what the boundaries are.
