Preparation
-
Training your cat requires as much focus from you as it does your pet. Beginning your cat's training when tired or unfocused can lead to inconsistencies in the training regimen. Set aside a period everyday when well rested and alert to begin your cat's training. To keep your cat's attention you need to train it in a quiet environment free from distractions. Find a time when you can spend 10 to 15 minutes training your cat without interruption.
Teaching
-
Begin training your cat one command at a time. Attempting to teach your cat several commands at once will only confuse it. Use a soft, calming tone when voicing your command, and use your cat's favorite food as a treat to reward it during training. Repeat the same command and use the same movements during training. Remain positive. Cats, like people, respond differently to training, and some cats may take longer than others to grasp your teachings.
Reward
-
The most effective way to teach your cat is through the use of positive reinforcement. Rewarding your cat with praise and a treat will encourage it to repeat the reinforced behavior. Immediately praise and reward your cat whenever you notice it exhibit the slightest understanding of what you're teaching. Train your cat before a regular meal so it is hungry enough to want the treat you reward it with. Be sure to account for the treats used in your cat's training when measuring how much to feed it for the rest of the day.
Repetition
-
Training your cat takes time and repetition. Once you begin a training regimen you need to stick to it as best you can. Training your cat at the same time and place everyday will help reinforce your lessons. Sporadic training sessions will not teach your cat anything, and taking too many days off between sessions will lose any progress made to that point. Only begin a training regimen when you know that you have the time necessary to see the process through.

Phases of Teaching Cats
Training a cat may seem like an impossible task, but cats respond to many of the same training methods used on dogs. Combine positive encouragement with a few treats and your cat can learn to respond to such basic commands as come, shake, stand and wave. When training your cat, establish a routine that keeps your cat's attention focused by dividing your cat's training into four phases: preparation, teaching, reward and repetition.
