Be alert when you enter and leave your home. Cats can quickly pass through a door that is only open a few inches. When you open the door to your home, look around to see if you cat is nearby. Saying "stop" or "no" can keep your cat from trying to get out.

Place a bell around the cat's neck. The sound of a bell alerts you to your cat's presence. This comes in handy when you have other things on your mind. The sound of the bell reminds you that your cat is near the door and could escape.

Keep a spray bottle of water near all entrances. Spray the cat with a water bottle when it is near the door. Cats hate water, so spraying the cat with a little water is a known deterrent to stop bad cat behavior. When you see your cat near the door, spray a little water to train it to stay away from the door.

Fill a spray bottle with one part water and one part vinegar. Shake well and then spray the bottoms of all the entrances in your home. Cats hate the smell of vinegar, so it is a good cat repellent. Reapply every four or five days or whenever the vinegar evaporates.
