How to Train Your Cat to Stay, Come and Give Paw

Some people believe that training a cat is an impossible thing to do. However, even if you have an adult cat in your home, you can train the cat to obey very simple commands, such as "stay," "come" and "paw." By acquiring control in situations where cats might otherwise do as they please, you can save yourself the effort of always having to psychically remove cats from situations where they are clawing on furniture, walking on counters, or even hiding when it's time for a bath.

Instructions

    • 1

Use treats during the training. Make sure they are healthy, meaning they are made from real meats, not meat byproducts, and have limited artificial ingredients, if any. Wait until long after you feed your cat a regular meal. A hungry cat will be more motivated by treats.

    • 2

Prop your cat up, such as on a desk or table, so you can look in the cat's face while training.

    • 3

Give the "Stay!" command when your cat starts to leave the area. At the same time, put your hand up so your palm is in front of your cat's face.

    • 4

Say "Good" and use your cat's name. Break off a bite's worth of the treat and give it to the cat. Keep repeating this sequence each time your cat tries to wander away.

    • 5

Put your cat on the ground. Use the "Stay" command. Then, move away and wait for your cat to sit or lie down.

    • 6

Wait 10 seconds before giving the "Come!" command. Use a happy, excited voice and this time, use the cat's name.

    • 7

Pet your cat and give a bite of treat if the "come" command is obeyed. Repeat the process, moving further and further away each time.

    • 8

Let your cat get into a comfortable sitting position to teach the "Give paw" command. Hold up a dish of food above your cat's head. A very small amount of food will do. When your cat reaches up for the food, take that paw in your hand and say "Give Paw." Use the cat's name.

    • 9

Offer praise and the food as a reward when your cat allows you to take the paw. Keep offering praise as your cat eats the food you offer. Repeat this process. Eventually, your cat will raise the paw when you saw "Give paw." Reward with a treat and praise.
