How to Stop Cats From Ripping Screens

Whether you have screens in a door or in windows in your home, your cat might think that this is the perfect place to sharpen claws, climb or just hang out -- literally. When these things happen, your cat might end up responsible for ripping right through the screen, which will generally require that you replace it. With some simple grooming and training techniques, you can stop your cat from ripping through the screens in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep your cat's claws trimmed. This involves using nail clippers to cut off the tip of your cat's nails only.

    • 2

Fill a regular spray bottle with water. Have it near the screens your cat likes to climb on and scratch.

Use the spray bottle when your cat starts to scratch or climb on the screen. Give a few small squirts of water, which most cats hate. This helps associate the screen with something negative.

    • 3

Add two-sided tape to various areas on the screen. Cats hate the way tape feels on their paws. Again, this adds a negative association with the screen. After a week or two, you can remove the tape.

Put the two-sided tape back on the screen at the beginning of each season to remind your cat of the unpleasantness.
