How to Make a Kitten Go Potty

Generally, you don't need to housetrain cats at all. The mothers show the kittens what to do; your only role is changing the cat litter or opening the door. However, if you have adopted a young kitten by itself, you might need to show the kitten how to use a litter tray. This is not at all difficult because this kind of hygiene is a natural behavior for cats. Potty training a puppy takes a good bit of time and patience; potty training a kitten is achievable in a few days.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove items that might look like places to defecate to a kitten, notably pot plants and seed trays. Place them out of reach or in a room the kitten won't visit.

    • 2

Position the litter tray somewhere quiet and easily accessible to the kitten. Place newspapers underneath, in case the kitten kicks out litter in the beginning.

    • 3

Show the kitten where the litter tray is. A few hours after bringing the kitten home, pick her up and put her in the tray.

    • 4

Place the kitten in the litter tray a few times a day, especially just after meals and when the kitten has woken from a sleep.

    • 5

Clean up any accidents immediately with a cleaning spray. You need to remove the odor so the kitten doesn't use it as a cue in the future. Never scold or punish the kitten for accidents, she won't understand.
