Problems With Soft Paws

SoftPaws are plastic claw covers that are designed to prevent damage cats can cause from scratching. Made of thin plastic, they come in a wide variety of colors and are made of nontoxic materials. Sizes range from kitten to large. While SoftPaws provide a safe, effective alternative to declawing, some cat owners may encounter problems with their use.
  1. Application

    • Some cats may not be cooperative when their owner tries to apply the SoftPaws. Many cats don't like having their paws handled, and the application process can try the patience of both owner and pet. Claws must be trimmed prior to application. You should be careful when trimming claws to not cut the quick of the cat's claw, which can cause bleeding. The quick is the white area near the base of a cat's claw and can be hard to see. If you do cut the quick, use a styptic pencil to quickly stop the bleeding.

It may not be possible to apply SoftPaws to all of a cat's claws in a single session. However, after a few applications, the procedure should become easier. Cats should be supervised closely for five minutes after application.

    Outdoor Cats

    • SoftPaws are not appropriate for cats that go outdoors, as outdoor cats rely on their sharp claws for protection.

    Inadvertent Removal

    • SoftPaws are meant to last four to six weeks before falling off. However, they can fall off before that time, necessitating a reapplication. You will need to check your cat's claws periodically to determine if any have fallen off.

    Snagging

    • Cats' claws continually grow, which can result in a gap between the SoftPaw and the claw itself. This can lead to a cat snagging its claws on fabric, carpet or furniture. Some cats can get distressed when this happens and the snag can damage the material. If you notice that a gap is forming between the SoftPaw and a claw, use a nail clipper to trim the end of the SoftPaw. This loosens the adhesive so it falls off, allowing you to replace it.

    Feline Temperment

    • While most cats adapt to SoftPaws quickly, some cats never adjust. If you notice your cat chewing or grooming its nails excessively or walking awkwardly after a few days, you should discontinue use.
