Things You'll Need
- Litter box
- Cat treats
Instructions
Set up the litter box in any room of your choice. Remember, from time to time the litter box might end up releasing an odor, so places like the bathroom, the laundry room, or even the garage are good rooms to keep it in. Make sure the room you choose is accessible to the cat at all times. Also, make sure the room you choose will be the permanent room for the litter box. Cats generally hate it when their box is moved, and chances are your cat will stop using the box if it̵7;s moved around too much.
Introduce your cat to the litter box, as if it were another animal, in order to make sure your cat is comfortable with the box and its purpose. After a few minutes of sniffing it out, the cat should start to get a general instinct about what it is.
Watch your cat carefully, and when you see the cat squatting, pick it up and set it in the litter box. Eventually it will start to realize that's where it is supposed to go.
Give the cat a treat and show it affection for going potty properly. Over time, your cat will understand the idea of what the box is and what it̵7;s used for, and will go there all on its own. Wait to give the treat until after the cat has done its business and has left the litter box.
Help your cat go to the bathroom about once or twice. Most cats like to go to the bathroom in private just like humans, and sometimes cats might get too comfortable with treats and having someone watching them so that they only go to the bathroom under those circumstances.
