How Can I Stop My Cat From Meowing?

A cat's constant meowing can be annoying and distracting, especially when you are trying to sleep. Cats communicate in different ways, including meowing; so when your cat meows it is trying to tell you something. Perhaps your cat is sick, hungry or just bored. There are a few reasons why cats meow excessively, and the behavior can be curbed if you know what's causing it. Look for patterns in your cat's behavior, such as meowing only in the morning when you wake or at night when you go to bed. This should give you a clue about what's causing it.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your cat's food bowl, water bowl or litter box. Cats sometimes meow to tell you that there is a problem with one of these things, so give your cat fresh water and food and keep the bowls full. Cats are also clean creatures and don't like a dirty litter box, so keep the litter box clean and change the litter every few days.

    • 2

Exercise your cat in the evening before bedtime to encourage it to sleep. Give your cat toys to play with or play with your cat with a string or laser pointer to help use up some energy and alleviate any boredom that might cause your cat to meow when you are trying to sleep. If the playing doesn't make it sleepy, it will at least keep your cat entertained and distracted from meowing.

    • 3

Take your cat to the veterinarian. Cats will sometimes meow excessively or act strangely when they are ill, pregnant or in heat. Have your veterinarian check for these things or evaluate your cat to see whether there is anything else that may cause your cat to meow excessively such as separation anxiety or cat dementia.

    • 4

Ignore your cat when it meows excessively. If there is nothing physically wrong with your cat or its surroundings, than it is mostly likely displaying attention-seeking behavior, and responding to it will just reinforce the bad behavior. When your cat starts meowing, walk away or leave the room and it will soon learn that this type of behavior will not get the attention it wants.

    • 5

Squirt your cat with a spray bottle filled with water. If your cat is still meowing excessively for no reason, fill a spray bottle with some water and spray your cat with the water every time it meows. Your cat will soon associate this behavior with getting sprayed and will stop doing it.

    • 6

Give your pet a companion if it is lonely or bored. If your cat is social and friendly toward other animals, get another cat that is about her age for someone to play with and distract it from meowing at you all day long.

    • 7

Reward your cat when it is quiet. When your cat is sitting quietly or following you around without meowing, give it a treat or praise to reward your cat for not meowing. If it is meowing but then stops and remains quiet, give her a treat to reward it for stopping.
