How to Teach Cats Not to Claw the Furniture & Walls

If you have a cat at home, you might always be worried about the thought of leaving them while no one is around. While cats can be lovely pets, they can also be a source of headache if they are not trained properly. Cats love to claw walls and furniture pieces just like dogs love to nibble on them. If you plan on leaving your cat at home while you go grocery shopping or head to work, you can teach your cat not claw your furniture and walls.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the scratching pad or post as close to the wall or furniture piece that your cat often scratches. Observe the behavior of your cat and see whether he continues to claw the furniture or wall.

    • 2

Tell your cat to stop clawing the furniture or wall if you see him doing so. Give him a firm "no" or "ah-ah," and gently pick up your pet and take him near the scratching pad or post. Do this gently so as not to scare him.

    • 3

Place the paws of the cat on the pad or post in order to simulate scratching. Praise your cat by stroking him or saying, "Good (name of cat)," to make him realize that he is doing the right thing.

    • 4

Continue to observe your cat and reprimand him firmly when you see him clawing your furniture or wall. Divert him to the right spot for clawing or scratching.
