Instructions

Place the litterbox somewhere private and accessible. Laundry rooms and bathrooms are common placement choices. This will keep the litterbox out of view and help your cat feel comfortable doing its business.

    • 2

Show the cat the litterbox. Manually grab the cat's paw and scoop the litter to help your cat understand. If you see your cat scratching at the carpet or sniffing behind furniture, this may be a sign it needs to use the bathroom. Carry the cat to the litterbox.

    • 3

Confine the cat to the area with the litterbox. Generally cats are fast learners, but if the cat doesn't seem to be picking up the idea after a couple of days, locking the cat in the room with the litterbox will limit its options for places to use the bathroom.

Keep the litterbox clean. A cat may refuse to use a litterbox if it isn't kept tidy, especially in the early stages of litterbox training. Scoop it out daily.
