Things You'll Need
- Metal bowl the size of the inside of your toilet
- Flushable cat litter
Instructions
Train your cat to use the litter box. A cat must rely on this instinct to move from the litter box to the toilet.
Move the litter box to the bathroom and gradually elevate it. If the litter box is not already in the bathroom, slowly move it right next to the toilet. Slowly raise the litter box using newspapers or phone books until it is the same height as the toilet.
Move the litter box to the top of the toilet seat. This will allow the cat to understand the correct location of his bathroom place. Allow the cat to get used to this litter box location for at least a few days before moving on to the next step.
Replace the litter box with the metal bowl in the toilet. Fill the metal bowl with a few inches of kitty litter and watch your cat go to the bathroom. Praise him/her when he goes in the correct place and dump litter into toilet before filling again with clean litter.
Slowly reduce the amount of litter. Over the course of a few weeks, reduce the amount of litter until there is none in the bowl.
Teach your cat where to position his/her paws. When using the bathroom, your cat may keep a few paws in the metal bowl. Pull each one out when you see him/her doing this until it is done instinctively.
Remove the metal bowl. When your cat is going to the bathroom without using the metal bowl, continue to watch his progress, bringing back the bowl if necessary.
