How to Prevent Feral Cats From Entering a Cat Door

If you have an outdoor cat and a cat door on your door, other cats might wander into your home where they are not welcome. Feral cats pose risks to your cat and belongings, and should not be allowed into the home. They might be persistent, and you might need to make several attempts before you manage to get rid of them.

Instructions

    • 1

Set regular feeding times for your cat and clean any scraps of food lying around, because feral cats might come in expecting to find food.

    • 2

Watch the cat door and startle the feral cats if they come in by shaking a tin can filled with coins, making loud noises or spraying it with a water gun.

    • 3

Close the cat door when you can't watch it, especially at night. Your own cat will not be able to use the door, but it is better for cats to stay in at night anyway. Cats can encounter accidents because drivers don't see them, and cats often hunt during the night, endangering wildlife.

Install a special cat door and have the vet implant a microchip in your cat if the feral cats continue to enter the house. Some cat doors recognize your cat's microchip implant and only open for your cat. Feral cats and neighbors' cats would not be able to use the cat door again.
