How to Stop My Cat From Urinating in One Spot

A cat that previously used a litter box routinely may begin eliminating inappropriately for a variety of reasons. If your cat begins making messes outside of the litter box, work through a careful process to determine why your cat is behaving in this manner. Often a cat will choose one spot and urinate in this location repeatedly. After you rule out health reasons, take steps to correct the behavior and stop your cat from urinating in one spot.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your cat to a veterinarian for a health assessment. Your cat may be suffering a medical issue that is causing the inappropriate elimination. Follow your veterinarian's advice if your cat needs medical attention. If your cat does not have any health issues, proceed with the behavior modification techniques.

    • 2

Clean the area where your cat repeatedly urinates with the enzyme-based cleaning product. Spray the area with the cleaner and wipe it up with paper towels to remove the odors from the cat's urine. If you leave urine odors in this area, it will continue to attract your cat back to this spot to urinate.

    • 3

Place two or three extra litter boxes around the house to ensure your cat has ample opportunity to find a nearby litter box when he needs one. Place the litter boxes in quiet areas where your cat can use them undisturbed. Use kitty litter you know your cat will tolerate--do not make changes in brands because this can upset your cat and make him avoid the litter boxes.

    • 4

Keep the litter boxes perfectly clean. Scoop out debris as quickly as possible after your cat uses the litter box.

    • 5

Set one litter box in the exact spot where your cat continues to eliminate inappropriately. Gradually move this litter box away from the spot in 1-inch increments until the litter box sits in a suitable spot.

    • 6

Place items in the spot that will make it undesirable for your cat to urinate there. Cover the area with aluminum foil or plastic sheeting. Place an open container of Vicks VapoRub there or spray the area with strong perfume. Set highly scented potpourri near the area to discourage your cat.
