Training an Outside Cat to Use the Litter Box

Outdoors, any area with dirt is a cat’s litter box, in the eyes of the cat at least. Training such a cat to use a litter box indoors is a bit more difficult than training a young indoor kitten. It isn’t impossible but success can vary. A lot depends on the temperament of the cat, whether it previously ever used a litter box before and your training method.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a large litter box for the cat. A cat used to going outdoors will be more accepting of a large litter box rather than doing its business in a cramped box. Your best bet for finding these is to go to a pet store, as they tend to stock different sizes; large department stores or grocery stores usually only stock medium-sized boxes.

Fill the box with a mixture of dirt from outdoors and a soft litter. When the cat gets used to going in the box, you’ll be able to use just litter without the dirt. For now, however, the cat will be more inclined to use a box containing some dirt.

    • 3

Set the box away from food and sleeping areas and in a quiet, private area (such as a corner of a room). Cats usually prefer to use a litter box where they won’t feel disturbed as they go about their business.

    • 4

Place the cat’s excrement, if you notice any outdoors, in the box. Just make sure it is the cat’s; if you don‘t know for sure, don‘t use it. This gives a big hint that the litter box is intended for this use.

    • 5

Leave the cat alone in the area with the box. If you are gone for several hours and notice fresh droppings in the box, then you know it is the start of success.

    • 6

Scoop feces and urine from the litter box at least once daily. Cats are clean creatures and do not like to use a dirty box. The cat might stop using the box if you do not keep it clean.
