How to Stop a Cat From Spraying Urine

A common misconception about cats spraying urine is that the behavior is associated with litter box training. Feline spraying is actually a method of a cat leaving messages for other cats through the release of pheromones. Spraying is seen in both male and female cats. Both sexes spray urine during mating season and in an effort to mark their territory. Households with multiple cats are more likely to experience problems with spraying, due to dominance issues and stress related to living conditions and competition. Stopping and preventing spraying behaviors requires work and persistence on the part of the owner.

Instructions

    • 1

Treat the area where the cat has been spraying by scrubbing these areas thoroughly with a small cloth and bleach diluted in water. Completely remove the odor to prevent future spraying.

    • 2

Mix a solution containing 50 percent white vinegar and 50 percent water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle. Spray the solution all over the area in which the cat has been marking to deter future marking behavior.

    • 3

Spray Feliway synthetic pheromone on areas in which the cat has been spraying. Spray daily until the cat is comfortable with the area. When stress-free and comfortable with the area, cats can be seen rubbing their heads on it and rolling in the area.
