How Do I Train a Cat to Use a Cat Door?

A basic cat door consists of a weighted flap that swings open and shut in a frame that fits in any door, according to Know Your Cat. More sophisticated models might have a magnet attached to the bottom of the flap to prevent unnecessary swinging. Some cat flaps have electromagnetic catches that only open when the cat wearing the corresponding collar approaches the cat flap. This keeps out stray cats and wild animals, such as raccoons and possums. Once your cat knows how to use his cat door, he will have the freedom to come and go as he pleases.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the flap from the cat door and place the cat next to the open frame.

    • 2

Encourage the cat to step through the frame. Enlist the help of a kitty-approved person to kneel on the other side of the frame and coax the cat through, if necessary. Give the cat a treat when he goes through the frame.

    • 3

Repeat the process until the cat is comfortable with going in and out of the cat door with the flap removed.

    • 4

Replace the flap in the cat door. Open the flap slightly and coax the cat through the door. Treat the cat when he goes through the door.

    • 5

Repeat until you are hardly holding the flap open and the cat is pushing the flap with its head.

    • 6

Stand on the outside of the cat door while your cat is inside, or vice versa. Call your cat to you and give him a treat when he comes through the cat door on his own. If he is hesitant, go back a step until he is comfortable opening the door by himself.
