How to Train a Cat to Poop in the Toilet

Cats are clean animals that often refuse to eliminate in their litter boxes if they are dirty. While a regularly cleaned litter box is a good way for cats to live indoors with their humans, cleaning the litter box can be a chore, especially if Kitty’s stomach is upset. Training a cat to defecate in the toilet might seem like a pipe dream, but with some patience and perseverance, it is entirely possible to have a toilet trained cat.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your cat’s litter box next to the toilet for a few days so he can get used to eliminating in this new room.

    • 2

Gradually elevate the litter box a few inches at a time with a crate or table until it is level with the toilet seat. This helps your cat get used to eliminating at a greater height.

    • 3

Place the litter box directly on the toilet, with the lid up and seat down. Leave it there until your cat is used to the box’s new location.

    • 4

Place a metal bowl or tray inside the toilet bowl, making sure it fits snugly.

    • 5

Fill the metal bowl or tray with flushable cat litter.

    • 6

Gradually reduce the amount of litter in the metal bowl. Clean out the bowl every time your cat uses it to reduce odor.

    • 7

Fill the metal bowl with a small amount of water once you’re barely using any litter. Gradually increase the amount of water in the bowl each day.

    • 8

Remove the bowl once your cat is comfortable defecating in approximately one inch of water. Allow the cat to defecate directly in the toilet bowl.
