Cat Electronic Training

While training a cat can be difficult, it is certainly not impossible. Cat electronic training involves using electronic devices to induce or discourage certain behaviors in a cat. Humans cannot always be around to correct a behavioral problem, so training may not be effective because punishment for a certain behavior is inconsistent. Electronic training devices aim to solve this problem.
  1. Function

    • Electronic training uses electronic devices to teach a cat proper or safe behavior. The electronic devices usually work by giving an unpleasant sensation to a cat when it exhibits unacceptable behavior. After experiencing the unpleasant sensation a few times, the cat learns to associate it with the unwanted behavior. Using electronic training, a cat can be trained to stay within a certain boundary such as the yard or to stop destructive behavior such as scratching furniture.

    Fence

    • An electronic training device can act like an invisible fence to stop a cat from entering or leaving certain areas. An electronic fence is usually not an actual fence, but a system that detects your pet's whereabouts and sends unpleasant sensations such as mild static pulses when it wanders out of the set area. Using an electronic cat fence, you can keep the cat away from the kitchen or keep it within the yard.

    Mat

    • Electronic training can also be done using an electronic mat placed on small areas to stop the cat from entering the area. A mat should be used when a cat exhibits problem behavior only in certain spots. For example, it can be placed on the hood of a car or on the sofa to train the cat to stay off those surfaces. A mat usually works by sending small pulses when touched.

    Spray

    • If using small electric pulses on your cat seems daunting, you can opt to use a spray instead. Electronic training by spraying uses a motion detector and an aerosol can of non-toxic spray. It dissuades the cat from entering certain areas by spraying it when its movement is detected by the sensor. This device is effective to correct unwanted behavior exhibited in certain small areas such as near furniture, on kitchen counter and near plants.

    Considerations

    • For an electronic device that the cat will carry, ensure that it is waterproof and safe if the cat comes into contact with water. Also, some devices have different levels of correction sensation, so choose the most appropriate level that will train your cat without causing any harm.
