How to Stop a Cat With Repellent

Due to their independent nature and ability to climb almost any fence or structure, cats will often stray into areas they don't belong. According to The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, about 15 to 30 percent of people who suffer from allergies will be allergic to cats and dogs, with cats being twice as likely to cause allergic reactions. Cats can also be lethal hunters, disturbing nests of songbirds, squirrels and other small animals that home owners would rather be left alone. There are several ways to safely repel cats from areas of the home and yard that would be better off feline-free.

Squeeze several lemons into a spray bottle, and then cut up the peels and leave them to soak in the bottle. Cat Haven website states that spraying lemon juice around your yard should deter cats. You can also use lemon spray in the house on beds and furniture.

Keep cats off furniture and tables by placing thick double-sided tape in placing they frequent. Cats dislike the feeling of tape on their paws. This also works with aluminum foil.

Purchase a deterrent device with a motion detector from a pet supply store. You can mount these indoors or outdoors. When the cat triggers the sensor, it makes a high-pitched alarm that cats dislike.

Check your local pet supply store for spray on repellents that use ingredients such as coyote or fox urine. These are extremely pungent odors that are threatening to cats. Keep in mind these should only be used outdoors.

Have a spray bottle filled with water handy when you are indoors and with your cat. Squirt the cat with water as soon as it jumps onto a counter or furniture where you don't wish it to be.
