How Do I Get My Cats to Stop Jumping on Furniture?

Cats are naturally curious animals and will explore every surface in your home, including the furniture in the living room, bedroom, kitchen or basement. This also means that the cat will leave its hair and paw prints over everything it roams across. Keeping your cats off the furniture in your home can be accomplished before the living room sofa ends up covered in fur and claw marks.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a spray bottle with plain water.

    • 2

Spray the water near the cat's face or on its back each time the cat jumps onto a piece of furniture. Never spray the water directly into the cat's face because this could cause the cat to become aggressive in the future.

You can also attempt to scare the cat off of the furniture by clapping your hands near the cat or creating any other loud noise. Do not create the noise directly by the cat's ears as this could damage its hearing. Fill an empty soda can with a handful of pennies and shake it when the cat jumps on the furniture.

Avoid eating food on any furniture that you want the cat to stay away from. If this is not possible, be sure to clean up any food particles that may have fallen onto the furniture immediately so the cat will not be attracted to the smell of the food.

Purchase a cat bed. Make the bed a place the cat will be attracted to by placing several toys or a small sachet that contains catnip around the area of the bed.
