How to Modify a Toilet for Cat to Flush

If your cat is part of your family, why shouldn't he use the toilet like other family members? That's the rationale of many people who toilet train their cats. Those who accomplish this neat feat reap the benefits of not having to scoop and change a stinky litter box. The only problem some people who successfully toilet train Fluffy encounter is that they still need to flush the toilet after Fluffy uses it. Fortunately, just as it's possible to train a cat to use the toilet instead of a litter box, it's possible to train a cat to flush the toilet.

  1. How to Modify a Toilet for Cat to Flush

    • 1

Rub catnip on a cat toy that your feline enjoys playing with. Some cats have a preference for small stuffed rodents, while others prefer plastic balls. If you can find a toy with a bell or squeaker inside, that's even better. Like the catnip, this will make the toy more appealing to Fluffy.

    • 2

Cut a piece of twine about 18 inches in length. This twine will act as an extension for your toilet's flusher. Although your cat may be able to get up on the toilet to do his business, having Fluffy reach directly for the flusher may result in him losing his balance and landing inside the toilet bowl. While this may make for a humorous scene, it may also discourage Fluffy from using the toilet in the future, which would mean that all your training would go, well, down the toilet.

    • 3

Tie one end of the twine to the toilet flusher. Knot the twine securely, so that it doesn't slip off when you pull downward on the string. Tie the cat toy you've rubbed with catnip to the end of the twine hanging toward the floor. When Fluffy pulls on the string, he'll exert downward pressure on the flusher, so that the toilet will flush. Now all you have to do is train Fluffy to pull on that string after he uses the toilet (see Tips).
