How to Train a Hyperactive Cat With a Treatball

Many cats that appear to by hyperactive are actually suffering from low levels of stimulation. Cats that are left alone for most of the day may become hyperactive when owners return home. Although a certain amount of excitement is to be expected, cats that continue this behavior for extended periods of time must be trained. One of the easiest ways to train a hyperactive cat to stay calm is by providing additional stimulation in the form of a treat ball.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a cat treat ball at a pet store or pet supply company. Treat balls come in a wide variety of styles, shapes and colors. The basic design of a treat ball is a container with a hollow center and a series of holes large enough for treats to be dispensed from.

    • 2

Place five to six cat treats inside the treat ball as directed by the manufacturer's instructions. You can also place dry cat food into the treat ball as well.

    • 3

Call your cat, or walk to the location in which the cat is.

    • 4

Place the treat ball in front of the cat's nose and allow it to smell the treats that are inside.

    • 5

Walk to a location that is out of the main flow of traffic and place the treat ball on the floor for the cat to play with.

    • 6

Monitor the cat's interaction with the treat ball. It should not be too difficult for the cat to get the treats out. However, it should be difficult enough to occupy the cat for at least 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 7

Continue using the treat ball on a daily basis. Rotate the types of treats that are placed inside the treat ball to provide the cat with variety and maintain its interest.
