How to Keep a Cat From Using Your Flower Box As a Litter Box

The best way to keep a cat from using your flower box as a litter box is to keep the cat out of the flower box altogether. You can discourage the cat by putting things you may already have around your house into the flower box to make it less attractive to the cat. Since cats have different "tastes," you may need to experiment a little bit to determine what most effectively drives your problem critter away from the flower box.

Things You'll Need

  • Household ammonia
  • Baby food jars or other small jars
  • Orange peels
  • Pinecones
  • Eggshells
  • Bamboo skewers

Instructions

    • 1

Put several small jars of an ammonia solution in the flower box. Fill the jars half with household ammonia and half with water. Bury the open jars in the flower box so that just the rims extend above the dirt. The smell will discourage most cats, but it may bother you as well.

    • 2

Throw orange peels into your flower box. If you do not want your box to look messy, bury them just under the soil. Most cats dislike the smell of citrus fruits and will leave the flower box alone.

    • 3

Place pinecones among the flowers. They look decorative and make the flower box far less inviting for a cat's digging and squatting.

    • 4

Crunch up eggshells for the soil. The smell and texture will discourage the cat and keep it out of the flower box.

    • 5

Place bamboo skewers among the plants. This will make the area hard to walk through and prevent the cat from entering the flower box.
