How to Stop a Cat from Urinating on Beds

Although cleaning a soiled cat litter box is not a high-rated task, it is much better than cleaning up after a cat who urinates in inappropriate places such as beds. Your pet may be engaging in this undesirable behavior due to changes in its environment or other sources of stress. You can use several methods to stop a cat from urinating on beds, but you have to be persistent and patient.

Immediately after the cat soils the bed, treat the bedding and mattress with a liquid enzyme cleaner formulated to remove cat urine smell, such as Dumb Cat Anti-Marking and Cat Spray Remover (available at major pet stores). If you do not completely remove the smell, the cat may urinate in the same place again. After using the enzyme cleaner, wash bedding as you normally would.

Provide uncovered, clean cat litter boxes at different locations throughout your home. Your cat may have a negative association with its current litter box. If she was startled while in the box, or is being kept away from it by other animals in your home, she will seek out other areas to urinate. Providing alternate appropriate areas for your cat's relief may stop her from using your bed.

Close the doors to your bedrooms if possible, or place plastic carpet runners, turned upside down, on beds to keep the cat from jumping on them. The plastic spikes on the bottom of the runner will feel unpleasant to the cat and may keep him off the beds.

Put a plastic mattress cover over your mattress to protect it if you decide to leave your bedroom doors open or cannot isolate your bed from the cat. The cover will keep urine from soaking the mattress and make removing the smell easier.
