How to Stop a Cat From Meowing When Home Alone

Cats have different vocal habits which vary by individual and by breed. Like people, some cats are just more loquacious than others, but that doesn't mean there's nothing you can do to stop your cat from meowing when home alone. If you keep your pet comfortable, healthy and relaxed he is much less likely to irritate your housemates or neighbors with excessive meowing while you're out of the house.

Take your cat into the veterinarian. If a cat is sick, he may meow continuously out of discomfort. A checkup at the vet will rule out illness as the cause of his meowing when home alone.

Play with your cat several times a day. Most cats crave human interaction and need a way to expend their energy. Playing with your cat will tire him out, allowing him to relax quietly when you are out of the house.

    • 3

Hire a pet sitter to come by and play with your cat for an hour or so if you are going to be out most of the day. If you have friends in the neighborhood with cats, you may wish to take turns stopping in to play with each other's cats.

Have your cat spayed or neutered. Female cats often meow incessantly when they go into heat and male cats may meow if they smell a female cat in heat. Unless you are planning on breeding your cat, spaying or neutering is the responsible thing to do, since it will make your pet more comfortable and decrease the chance of unwanted kittens.
